Note: Submissions for 2017 are now closed. Submissions for the 2018 editions of this series will reopen in Spring 2018.
We are looking for the best independent, young, and/or emerging poets in the country. To do so, we will first look for the best in each state, and publish a book featuring the best emerging poets for each state.
What kind of poetry should you submit?
Anything! We are looking to showcase each state's most talented emerging poets, regardless of genre. For organization and thematic purposes, the books will be divided into the following chapters by theme: Love, Life, Nature, Beauty, Grief & Death, Hope Happiness and Optimism, Fear, Heartbreak, Meaning, Other (Miscellaneous).
If you are unsure which of the chapters your poem(s) belong to, don't worry, we'll take care of that! Simply submit your best work, and we will handle the rest.
Thus, the following is a list of submission guidelines and common mistakes that could prevent your writings from being accepted. Follow these simple rules, and you'll be well on your way to being a published writer!
-We will accept a maximum of 3 poems from any one person. You may submit a total of five poems (attached in one document), and if one or more of your writings have been accepted you will be notified via email within 2 weeks of the submission deadline. (If selected, you will be notified via the email you listed on your submission page, so be sure to check your inbox and junk folder on a regular basis following your state's submission deadline.)
-We do not accept poems with an excess of profanity, sexual content, or violence. We will also not publish any work that romanticizes self-harm or suicide.
-We try to keep partisan politics out of our publications, in an effort to keep our publications enjoyable for people of all backgrounds and ideologies. Touching on current social, political, and economic issues is fine to a certain extent, but you should also submit non-political poems in case we deem the political statement to be too strong for a poetry publication (e.g. specifically naming politicians, demonizing a political party or belief, etc.).
-Do not send us documents of over 20 pages in length.
-The maximum word count per poem is 500 words, though we tend to prefer an average word count of 200 words or shorter. There is no minimum word count per poem.
-The writing must be completely your work, and not simply taken (or plagiarized) from the Public Domain or from the work of another author.
-Microsoft Word documents are preferred. We will not open any documents under formats we do not recognize. Do not send us images. PDFs are acceptable (but not preferred), but do not send us any image (screenshot, etc.) that would require us to retype the poem ourselves. It will not be accepted. To prevent confusion, please begin each new poem on a new page in your submitted document.
-Though not required, it would be helpful to list your pen name on the document you submit. Please also title all of your poems. If you do not include a title, we will title it ourselves (you will have a chance to review the title).
-By submitting your work for publishing consideration, you acknowledge that you've read and agreed to our copyright policy.
-Author bios (50-word max) must be written in the third person.
-Be patient: Please do not email us to check on the status of your submission. If you received an automatic confirmation email after making your submission, you can rest assured that we received it. When the submissions have been chosen for each new book, we will notify the chosen authors via email.
We are always looking for new talent, so don't be shy. We'll be looking forward to your submission!
